Location

Vrelo Bosne represents the spring of river Bosna, located southwest of the city of Sarajevo, below the slopes of the mountains Igman and Bjelasnica. Natural Monument is located in the area of the municipality of Ilidža and covers an area of 603 hectares.

History

Ancient Romans and Ottomans at this exact area, at the thermal springs, built spas/baths, and at the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, this was the fashionable center of Sarajevo. Today as well in this part can be seen remains of the Roman colony, as well as buildings from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Main Avenue (Velika Aleja) is an attractive promenade from the settlement Ilidža to Vrelo Bosne, planted with trees length of 3.5 kilometers planted back in 1888 and 1892. Carriages already in 1895 took visitors down the Main Avenue to Vrelo Bosne, and today they are a tourist attraction. The space itself of the spring of Bosnia has been under legal protection since 1954. After expert valorization of the entire space Vrelo Bosne was declared a Natural Monument in 2006 - II category in accordance with the International Classification Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Nature

The richness of nature in this area, which attracts a large number of users, is reflected in the quality of drinking water resources, thermal waters, forests, agricultural potentials, attractive locations for tourism and recreation, as well as in numerous cultural-historical heritage goods. However, what is most beautiful is the spring of the Bosna River itself, which springs from a number of strong karst springs at an altitude of 492 meters. Flora and fauna close to the spring is rich and specific and contributes to the beauty of the landscape, and gives a special value to the ambient.

Sights

The area of Vrelo Bosne as an important hydrological collector with exceptional biodiversity and preserved landscape and historical features, is zoned in accordance with the international criteria into two zones: Zone I (nucleus) with an area of 54.5 hectares, includes the spring of the Bosna River and the Bosna River from the spring to the Infiltration channel. Zone II (buffer) area of 548.50 hectares, comprises the catchment area of the spring at the foot of Mount Igman with a large hydrological diversity of which it is important to point out to: Stojčevac spring, Borin spring, the Bosna River and the underground thermal and thermo-mineral waters of lidža, groundwater of Sarajevo field; park spaces, including the Main Avenue and park areas around spas Ilidža and Stojčevac; archaeological site and the necropolis in the village Vrutci, Roman bridge in Plandište, the Austro-Hungarian villas in the Main Avenue and hotels in Ilidža, the building of the Forestry School.

Tourism

Vrelo Bosne provides also an attractive tourist offer. The Main Avenue (Velika Aleja) with the length of 3.5 kilometers is suitable for walking, cycling and jogging. Vrelo Bosne can be reached by walking or biking down the Main Avenue. Carriages that are a real attraction are available to visitors. The area of Vrelo Bosne is equipped with park furniture for stay in the countryside, and a playground for children. It has nicely decorated pedestrian trails, which allow access to lakes with swans, which are the most recognizable symbols of Vrelo Bosne.

Connection

The area of Nature Monument of „Vrelo Bosne“, 12 kilometers away from Sarajevo, can be reached by car from the road direction Sarajevo – Mostar (M-17), where at the Old Orthodox Church the road goes off to the left to Vrelo Bosne. Another option for arrival by car is from the direction of Ilidža to the beginning of the Main Avenue, which is closed to motor vehicles. Vrelo Bosne can be reached by public transport (tram) to the last stop on Ilidža wherefrom it takes about 10 minutes walk to the beginning of the Main Avenue 3.5 km long.
