The public institution manages with 23 protected areas and parts of ecological network in Zagreb County. In ecological network, or Natura 2000, there are four internationally important areas for birds and 20 areas important for the preservation of European species and habitats. Protected areas occupy 37.341,6 ha, or 12.2% in the Zagreb County area.

Flora and fauna:

Result of the great biodiversity in Zagreb County is many rare and endangered plant and animal species. Some of them are unique in Europe!

Souffia (Telestes souffia) - the only habitat for small freshwater fish souffia in Croatia is in the Bregana stream in Zagreb County. It is endangered to the extent that is threatened of extinction.

Corncrake (Crex crex) - this mysterious migratory bird comes to our country to fall in love and raise a family. On humid meadows, only singing males can be heard in the night. Corn crake lives on moist grasslands, which are used as pastures or mowing meadows, hidden among dense grass, it is almost impossible to see it.

Common sundew (Drosera rotundifolia) - a small plant carnivore that catches about 2000 insects during the summer, hidden in the cretaceous in Dubravica municipality. The name rosin (dew) originates from small transparent drops that plant secrets on leaves that reminds on dew. The plant is a few centimetres high and has simple leaves like terrestrial rosette.

Samobor’s Allyssum (Alyssum montanum ssp. Samoborense) grows in bushes form, leaves are covered with starry hairs (trichomes) on both sides, and flowers are yellow with four heart-shaped petals crossed. Samobor’s Allyssum blooms in March and April. The only site of this endemic species in Croatia is in Lipovečka Gradna valley along the Smerovišće quarry in Samobor.

Chess flower (Fritillaria meleagris L.) – due to its beauty, it is an ornament in spring meadow. It is 12-30 cm high and evolves from the bulb. Flowers are specific in colour and shape: large and heavy because of that they are drooping, colours are in range from red-brown to purple-coloured, with lighter and darker patterns. These patterns form a chessboard sample, from which comes the Croatian name for this kind – kockavica/chess flower. Despite its life span of 30 years, it belongs to sensitive species (VU) due to the loss of moist habitats where it grows.

White-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) - with a wingspan of 2 metres, the largest European eagle sails on our skies. Nests are built on large trees in the forests or wetlands where they can find food.

Landmarks:

The areas managed by the JU Zeleni prsten are not only rich in flora and fauna, but in many historic landmarks. In the Forest Park Tepec-Palačnik there are the remains of old Town of Samobor dating back to 13th century and the Saint Anna chapel from 18th century. In the area of significant landscape Zelinska glava, there is an old town of Zelingrad, built in the years after Tatar’s attack and it was first mentioned in 1295 when there was a castle/kaštelan with a royal crew. Most monuments of park architecture are around castles, curia/manor houses, or noble houses! The property where protected park is located is around the castle in Božjakovina once belonged to the Frankopan family and later to the Drašković family. The park in Jastrebarsko is located next to the castle that was owned by the Erdody family since 1517. Within the park in Lug there are Balag's Courts owned by the noble families Drašković, Erdody, Kulmer, and Kiepach.
