The first park of its kind in Montenegro, it has international importance because it connects the National Park Sutjeska (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and the National Park Durmitor. It occupies an area of almost 32,500 hectares.

History

The first regional nature park in Montenegro - Piva, was declared on 22 April 2015, on the Earth Day.

Nature

The mountainous landscape dominates. In addition to Piva Mountain, the regional park Piva includes three more mountains: Bioč 2397 meters, Maglić 2386 meters, Volujak 2336 meters. The relief is varied, where besides the mountains, pastures and forests dominate, and deep cut canyons of Tara, Piva Sušica, as well as mountain lakes: Crkvičko, Small and Big Stabanjsko, Trnovačko and Pivsko. Water comes through snowmelt, rainfall and from certain springs. In lakes of Piva we can find representatives of characteristic endemic species: triton and newt. Their place in the Regional Park also found bears, wild boars, capercaillies, roe deers, foxes...
In the park there are more than 1,500 species of plants, many of which are rare and endangered species, then more than 2,000 species of fungi, as well as numerous well-preserved forests. The rich flora of this landscape is confirmed by a healthy natural environment.
The area of Piva is one of the environmentally cleanest parts of Montenegro.

Sights

The lowest point of the regional parks Piva is at an altitude of 433 meters at Šćepan polje (field), at the confluence of the rivers Piva and Tara, which together on the border between Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina, create river Drina. It is also the place where most of the rafting tours end. In the lower course of Tara, are the most famous "bukovi" (rapids), by which the "Tear of Europe" is distinguishable. Karst sinkholes in the area of Vojvodića rupe (holes) or "green mountain sea", as they are also called, have not yet been sufficiently explored. They are a challenge for archaeologists, botanists, scientific expeditions.
In the P there are also protected cultural and historical monuments: Piva Monastery, the area of Šćepan Polje (Field) with the Church of St. Stephen, the monastery - church under Soko (Falcon). In the process of protecting is also the Tower of the Duke Lazar Sočica. The spiritual and cultural center of the region, Piva Monastery, which dates from the 16th century, in 1970, was moved to its original location, stone by stone, due to the construction of hydro-accumulation Piva Lake.

Tourism

Piva provides excellent conditions for an active holiday of individuals and families. Selection of ethno and eco-villages is great. This area is best known for the rafting on the river Tara, the deepest canyon in Europe. Tara rafting is available using wooden rafts, rubber, boats, and single and two-seater kayaks. In addition to rafting, hiking, biking, cross-country skiing are also present. The most beautiful among the lakes, Trnovačko Lake created among the mountain peaks in the shape of heart at 1517 meters, during the summer provides for both swimming and snowballing at the same time. The lake can be reached only by mountain trails from three directions.
